Anne Hegerty, 63, was a contestant on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2018 as part of the show’s eighteenth series. The Governess has been very open about her experience in the past, admitting she “hated” it.
I hadn’t quite imagined all of that.
Anne was the fifth contestant eliminated from the camp, with The Chase star lasting 18 days in the jungle.
Speaking about when she was asked to do the show, she said: “When they take you out for lunch and try to persuade you to sign the contract, they make it sound like a crystal maze with a bit of extra fresh air.
“I understood that it was miles from anywhere and it really was camping in the open, and there were real spiders and worms and everything.
“I understood that but I hadn’t quite imagined all of that to myself.”
Anne reiterated that although she had watched the show before in reality it was not the same.
She continued: “Well I hated it. It didn’t suit me.
“Everybody else there was tougher and more stoical than I was and I massively admired and respected them and sort of wished I could be more like that.
“I tried to be more like that, but at the beginning I was feeling extremely wobbly and like I had made a huge mistake.
“Nothing happened that I should not have expected but I sort of somehow hadn’t made it all real to myself.”
Speaking to hosts Declan Donnelly and Holly Willoughby on her departure, Anne revealed she had attempted to quit within the first few hours of arriving in the jungle, but was persuaded not to.
She said: “I felt like we were walking into hell and we got to Snake Rock and I couldn’t process it, the reality hit me and I was like, ‘What have I done?’
“I went into the BT [Bush Telegraph] the next morning and said, ‘I quit.’
“And they said, ‘Come back in a few hours.’ I was a zombie in Snake Rock for the first 24 hours.
“I could not have done it without ten other fantastic people, they are so kind.”
Anne admitted to Express.co.uk that she was fine until she got out of the helicopter and had to walk to the jungle.
She said: “I just felt myself sort of plodding and going down and down. I was thinking oh my god, how awful is this going to be?
“We are in the bad camp as it is, this might actually be a really bad camp. Have I made a terrible mistake?”
Anne admitted that once the camps joined together that was the first time she felt like she could actually stay in the jungle.
Harry Redknapp won her series with Emily Atack taking second place with the series being presented by Dec and Holly.
This was due to Ant McPartlin taking a year long break from TV in order to recover from his alcohol addiction.
You can watch I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! on ITV at 9pm.
