Virgin Radio host Chris Evans, 55, was joined on his Breakfast Show by his co-stars Vassos Alexander and Amelia Cox today. The broadcaster admitted he didn’t want to be “flippant” after he shared some news with listeners.

Amelia explained that she’d had to undergo heart surgery while Chris was recently absent from his regular slot over the May Bank Holiday.

The Virgin Radio host addressed his colleague’s health issue as he offered his support.

Chris began: “Now, just before we go any further. Just so I know, can you give me an on-air heads up here?

“Have you had anymore heart surgeries since we last met?”

Amelia replied: “No. I haven’t had any.”

Expressing his concern, the presenter asked if his colleague had recovered from her operation.

She commented: “Everything is all good. I’m going back to the gym today, which is exciting.”

The Virgin Radio host queried if she had to take some time from doing strenuous activities during the recovery process.

“I stopped going to the gym for two weeks,” Amelia confirmed.

Chris commented: “I’m being playful with it. Hopefully, not flippant. I took a week off and during that week you had heart surgery.

“It wasn’t open-heart surgery but it was still surgery.”

Amelia didn’t go into detail about the operation but explained that she was feeling much better.

Chris went on: “So you’re back at the gym today. Are you going to take it easy?”

“Yes,” Amelia commented. “I can’t do anything too above my head.”

The news broadcaster recently took to Twitter to reveal she was in hospital following an operation.

In May, Amelia penned: “Thanks so much to @kiripritchardmc and @killnofillpod for brightening up a Sunday evening in hospital. Couldn’t make the live show in person but got to watch the live stream from my bed!”

Earlier this year, Chris himself was forced to take some time away from Virgin Radio as he required surgery.

The radio presenter mistook symptoms of kidney stones for trapped wind and ended up spending two nights in hospital after heading into A&E.

He was later readmitted for minor surgery and has since made a full recovery.

Chris Evans airs weekdays on Virgin Radio from 6.30am.
