Former Emmerdale and Hollyoaks star Gemma Atkinson, 35, has admitted she is feeling worried about the absence of a squirrel that often visits her garden. The actress revealed her and boyfriend Gorka Marquez’s baby daughter Mia is also concerned about the animal’s whereabouts.

Opening up about the situation in view of her 1.5 million Instagram followers, Gemma explained the squirrel hasn’t been seen from her patio in three days, which is unusual.

She told fans: “This is day three that the squirrel hasn’t been back.

“Mia was looking for him yesterday, she was stood at the patio and I was like, ‘Oh, he’ll come back’.

“I don’t know what’s happened, he’s literally been every single day for like months and then nothing for three days, so I’ve left food out, I hope he’s alright.”

Gemma went on to insist she is trying to accept that “you’ve got to let nature take its course” if anything has happened to the squirrel.

She added: “It’s just nature isn’t it? If anything’s happened you’ve got to let nature take its course.

“As awful as that sounds, I’m one of them, I’ve had people messaging me saying, ‘Don’t feed the grey squirrels because they’re killing the red squirrels’.

“Or if I post about foxes, ‘Don’t help foxes, they eat squirrels and chickens… don’t feed magpies they eat the baby birds.’”

Gemma insisted in response to the complaints from some of her followers: “It’s nature.

“It’s what nature does, you’ve got to let it do its thing.”

In spite of her rational attitude towards the squirrel’s absence, the Hits Radio presenter explained the issue is making her “sad”.

Gemma added: “But it is making me sad, if he doesn’t come back I’ll be devo.”(sic)

Gemma went on to say she has loved witnessing the “bond” Norman and Ollie have developed with Mia and added that having pets around the house “teaches responsibility and compassion”.
