Gemma Atkinson fires back after being mum-shamed over daughters TV viewing

Gemma Atkinson shows her postpartum bump

Gemma Atkinson has hit back after being brutally mum-shamed for allowing her four-year-old daughter to watch fitness shows on TV.

The 38-year-old adores her eldest, Mia, but her parenting skills came under fire from one fan, who saw she was exposed to CrossFit games and claimed she should be viewing something more age-appropriate.

“Are you not afraid that you are going to make her body conscious watching all that TV? She should be watching kids programmes,” the fan insisted on Instagram.

“Be careful as this type of exposure to kids can cause them to be body conscious and have eating problems,” she warned.

Gemma hit back on Instagram Stories, admitting she was bemused by the criticism as she believed that the show would boost her “confidence”.

“I received this message about Mia loving CrossFit. The ‘should be watching kids programmes’ baffled me a little,” she explained to her 1.9 million followers.

“One of our friends is one of the best CrossFit athletes in the world and whenever she’s been to stay with us, Mia has looked up to her in awe of her physical strength and capabilities in regards to gymnastics etc.”

She added that she didn’t restrict her daughter when it came to having regular small treats, elaborating that she and Mia “also go for ice creams and have pizza every weekend and pic n mix at the cinemas. Fab lollies after tea and pancakes on Sundays!”

“We have (in my opinion) the perfect balance. I’m personally very happy that Mia loves sports and that she has strong role models and she CHOOSES to watch the games.”

Gemma jokingly added that she was “sick of” watching it personally, but that it was her daughter who didn’t want to change the channel.

“When it’s not CrossFit she loves The Yorkshire Vet or Come Dine With Me. Genuinely!” she chuckled.

“So no, I’m not afraid it’ll cause her image problems. I’m pleased it will give her confidence, great social skills and a zest for life.”

Gemma has had her parenting skills called into question on numerous occasions recently, with another follower claiming that her dog was positioned too closely to baby Thiago and warning her: “Not a great idea if unsupervised.”

Meanwhile, the former Hollyoaks star made it clear that she’s doing her best to promote a healthy body image and won’t be putting herself under pressure to regain the washboard stomach she had pre-pregnancy.

In one recent post, she shared a photo of her swollen post-birth stomach, declaring that she she isn’t expecting to “look like my old self for months”.

Fans thanked the influencer in the comments for “keeping it real” and normalising the physical effects of childbirth.

Gemma also recently confirmed in answer to a fan’s question that she has no regrets about welcoming baby number two.

The proud parent says she and partner Gorka Marquez haven’t “shared” out their love, but “multiplied” it instead.
