Kate Garraway shares sweet new snap of husband Derek Draper as they win at NTAs

TV presenter Kate Garraway took to Instagram today to share with her one million followers a sweet snap of her husband Derek as she video called him to tell him their documentary “Finding Derek” won at the National Television Awards, sponsored by OK!, last night.

The GMB favourite shared the video call screengrab which shows her in the corner holding the NTA gong as she share the news with Derek.

He can be seen smiling as his wife tells him the news that their documentary, won the Authored Documentary Awards at the glitzy ceremony at the O2 in London last night.

The fly-on-the-wall programme filmed every step of Derek's year-long battle with coronavirus following his hospitalisation with the respiratory illness in March 2020.

Kate, 54, captioned the sweet picture: “Wow. Thank you so so much. Have been in such an emotional daze all night I failed to get a single photo of me or the brilliant @flickerproductions team who made #[email protected]!!

"But maybe this is the photo you most wanted to see anyway – Me FaceTiming derek (via Darcey’s phone!) to tell him we had won! From him and from the bottom of our family’s hearts THANKYOU.”

The mum-of-two continued: “For all who are struggling on and holding on to hope – this is for you. And to all the other wonderful nominations in the category – @[email protected]@[email protected]_ proud to be among you and I salute your brilliance & bravery xxx.”

Fans were quick to share their congratulations to the journalist for the documentary’s success.

One said: “This was the most important award at the NTAs. Well done on your amazing and so insightful documentary Kate that touch my heart so deeply. The same goes to all the nominees. All amazing people with amazing stories to share.” This was followed by a high five emoji, a clapping hands emoji and red heart.

Another took to the comments box to share: “I don’t usually vote but went on to vote especially for you and Derek xxxxx”, followed by a heart eyes emoji.

A third penned: “Incredible woman and bravery. You always keep a smile on your face and warmth in your heart for others even when you have your own turmoil. You deserve this and every happiness that comes your way.”


Kate made an emotional speech as she went up to collect the gong, saying that Derek “should be here” to receive the award.

She said, after composing herself on stage: “Thank you so much for voting. I wonder if the reason why you did is because our story is your story.

She continued: “I think we have all been touched by the pandemic, whether it is livelihoods, mental health – all the other extraordinary documentaries that have been highlighted and nominated tonight, they have also been affected by the pandemic.”
