Kate Winslet cant stop crying as she wins Leading Actress at BAFTAs

The leading actress BAFTA has been given to Kate Winslet for her performance in I Am Ruth, which sees a mother and daughter work through emotional turmoil.

The 47-year-old actress: “[I am] guaranteed to be the one of the night to cry, I can’t see…”

She added that “small British television dramas can be mighty” and mental health stories such as this one “need to be heard”.

She said: “If I could break it in half, I would give the other half to my daughter Mia Threapleton, we did this together, kiddo.”

As she said the words, the camera cut to her daughter, who cried as she put her hands to her mouth, blew her mother some kisses, and mouthed the words: "I love you."

Kate went on to praise her daughter, Mia, as she said, honestly: "There were days when it was agony for her to dig as deeply as she did, into very frightening emotional territory, sometimes – it took my breath away."

She continued: "I Am Ruth was made for parents and their children.

"For families who feel that they are held hostage by the perils of the online world.

"For parents who wish that they could still communicate with their teenagers, but who no longer can."

"And for young people who have become addicted to social media and its darker sides – this does not need to be your life."

Kate added: “To people in power, please criminalise harmful content, we don’t want it… to any young person listening please ask for help, it will be there, just ask for it.”

The legendary actress is best-known for her role as Rose on Titanic – the James Cameron-directed film that came out in 1998, in which she starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

She arrived to the awards alongside her daughter, Mia Threapleton, who she worked alongside in I Am Ruth, and no doubt the reason for her emotional win was due to her girl being there with her.

On the red carpet, they coordinated their looks in black dresses, with Kate wearing a high-necked halter dress and matching black pumps.

Mia wore a jumpsuit, which was also halter-necked, and featured a white panel across the waist and flowing trousers.

The mother and daughter even matched their hair, with both donning a tied-up style with a backcombed front and dangly earrings.

I Am Ruth was co-written by Kate and released on Channel 4.

Kate shares Mia with her ex-husband, James Edward Threapleton, but the pair went on to divorce in 2001.
