Matt Lucas forced to pull out of show last minute due to health issue

Viewers distracted by Matt Lucas’ amazing weight loss

Matt Lucas has been forced to pull out of performing at the annual West End Does: Christmas concerts tonight. The actor and comedian posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, and said his ill health was the reason for dropping out.

Taking to the micro-blogging site on Saturday evening, he penned: “My apologies. Thanks to a ferocious head cold which has gone on to my chest, giving me an epic cough & a voice like an elderly toad, I am stuck in bed & unable to appear at the ‘West End Does: Christmas’ concerts tomorrow. I was so looking forward to joining the amazing cast. I know the concerts will be terrific anyway, as they always are.”

The concert, which is held twice on Sunday 10 December with an afternoon and an evening slot, features a star-studded lineup of performers including Jacob Fowler, Ella Vaday, Emma Kingston and Joanna Ampil.

Many of Matt’s 1.2 million followers flocked to the comments section to wish him a speedy recovery. One fan said: “Feel better soon, just had it and it takes two weeks.”

A second chimed in: “Alex took the boys to see Wonka last night and they absolutely loved it and loved you in it. Very excited to see Uncle Matt on the big screen. Hope you get better soon, lots of love matey.”

A third commented: “Get well soon my good man. I suffer with getting chest colds which invariably turn to chest infections. One medication I take which I get over the counter in Hun(I know not much use to you at the moment), works bloody wonders if you can get hold of it.”

A fourth typed: “Hopefully not like me, same symptoms and turns out to be Covid… Rest up.” A fifth said: “So sorry to hear you’re sick, Matt. Stay warm and bundled, with lots of baked potatoes, soup and tea.”

The concert was due to feature Matt and new soundtracks from his musical novel, The Boy Who Slept Through Christmas. Line of Duty star Vicky McClure was originally meant to host the festive event, but had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts.

The concert will feature a variety of traditional and contemporary carols, with guest choirs from Guildford School of Acting, Stagebox Musical Theatre and Our Dementia Choir. It will be staged at Cadogan Hall during both timings.

Last month, Matt openly poked fun at his weight loss transformation with a funny quip on social media. The former Channel 4 presenter sparked shock when he showed his slimmed-down appearance on The Great British Bake Off in 2022.

Speaking on Twitter, he quipped: “If I look thinner it’s because I’ve started doing intermittent farting.” The comedian cited that his dramatic weight loss was due to him not wanting to die young.

He told The Sun: “My dad died when he was 52, very suddenly. His dad died, I think at 56, so I was looking at the law of averages. I was very big and I was getting bigger in the pandemic. Sort of not being very active, not really going out, not seeing people, just eating a lot.”
