Queen Elizabeth II Only Has Her Makeup Professionally Done One Day a Year

Picture a monarch getting ready to address the public. Are you imagining a queen swarmed by a gaggle of ladies-in-waiting who take care of her every need? Queen Elizabeth II is not that kind of monarch, at least when it comes to beauty. In fact, she does her own makeup for most of her public appearances.

In her new book The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe, the queen’s royal dressmaker Angela Kelly reveals several facts about Her Majesty, including an unexpected tidbit about her incredibly down-to-earth beauty routine.

According to Kelly, there is only one day of the year when the queen hires professional help in crafting her beauty look: the day she records her annual Christmas speech.

The queen brings in professional makeup artist Marilyn Widdess, a longtime BBC employee who trained at the company’s in-house makeup department, for the occasion, Kelly explains in the book.

“You might be surprised to know that this is the only occasion throughout the year when Her Majesty does not do her own makeup,” Kelly wrote, per People.

The queen also makes a fashion exception for her Christmas speech and allows someone else to pick out her on-camera ensemble—albeit from a selection of looks she pulls herself as options. You can’t argue with the results.
