Netflix’s fascinating documentary Tiger King follows controversial animal park owner Joe Exotic, as he was embroiled in a murder-for-hire plot. One of the most compelling elements of the series, however, was the mystery surrounding Carole Baskin’s ex-husband Don Lewis, who disappeared without trace.

Carole is an American animal rights activist and CEO of Big Cat Rescue, a non-profit animal sanctuary based near Tampa, Florida.

The series captured her escalating feud with private zoo owner Joe, who was not too happy when the campaigner’s protests against his travelling animal shows resulted in a loss of income for him.

In 2020, Joe was convicted of attempting to hire a hitman to kill Carole, but the children of her ex Don also suspect that Carole could be a killer herself.

Following the release of the Netflix series, the star received abuse online over speculation that she had been involved in her second husband’s disappearance.

There have even been claims that Carole had killed him and then fed his body to their tigers, which she has steadfastly denied.

Speaking about season two of the hit show on This Morning, Carol told Josie Gibson and Phillip Schofield about recent reports that Don is alive and living in Costa Rica.

She said: “I’ll tell you what, one of the really exciting things that came out of Tiger King 2 is that they produced a letter from Homeland Security and it says that a special agent in charge with the FBI reached out to the Sheriff’s Detective.

“Which means this had to have happened after 2002 because Homeland Security wasn’t even around until 2002, and they said that my husband Don Lewis is alive and well in Costa Rica.

“And yet all of this hate has been made about me having something to do with his disappearance when Homeland Security has known where he is since at least back then,” she continued.

“His children from his first marriage think you killed him, minced him up and fed him to the tigers!” Phillip said, in response to the revelation.

Carole then replied: “I think maybe they should check with Homeland Security who seems to know where he is.”

When Phillip continued to ask Carole if she truly believes Don is alive, she replied: “I don’t know how it is that Homeland Security says he’s alive and well in Costa Rica, but I’m glad to hear it.”

Carole went on to hint at what the second season has in store, saying: “It was just like our everyday life for the past 30 years.

“We have been exposing the abuse, gathering the evidence and bringing these bad guys to justice, and now the cameras are coming along with us.

“And people are going to be so excited when they see Carole Baskin’s Cage Fight because it is true, it’s authentic, it’s raw and it’s just thrilling.”

The American TV personality appeared on the ITV magazine show to promote her new television show, Carole Baskin’s Cage Fight, which is airing on Discovery.

Since the success of Tiger King, Carole has appeared on the American equivalent of Strictly, Dancing with the Stars, where she even dared to dance to the song Eye of the Tiger.

The star has been married three times: first to Michael Murdock from 1979 to 1990, then to Don between 1991 and 2002, before finally settling down with current husband Howard Baskin, whom she wed in 2004.

Carole gave birth to daughter Jamie Veronica Murdock from her first marriage on July 16, 1980.

Her missing ex Don reportedly has four children in total: three daughters and another child, whose identity isn’t known, from his marriage to Gladys Lewis.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
