I’m a female miner – it’s dirty work but I scrub up well when I change out of high vis | The Sun
A young female coal miner is showing that there is plenty of room for women in this male-dominated industry.
Nikita (@nikitaherlihy11) shares her working life on TikTok and is loving it. “Living the dream,” she says.
She appears unfazed working in heavy industry with few female colleagues.
You’ve just got to put up with the dirt, says Nikita, who scrubs up pretty well outside work.
One minute her hair is pulled back in plaits, dressed head to toe in coal-smudged high-vis work gear, then transforms into a fresh-faced, blonde-haired woman.
“My life in the red dirt, FIFO is my life,” she says in her post.
FIFO (Fly In Fly Out) is a popular working arrangement in the mining, construction, oil, and gas industries.
FIFO employees fly into their work site for the duration of their roster, before flying home.
It's not for everyone, but this is Nikita’s life.
She often appears in her videos with a dirty face and overall, but always with a smile.
