Sophie, Countess of Wessex’s £100k diamond engagement ring has a sweet Royal Family link

Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward began dating in 1993. Nearly six years later, their engagement was announced by the Royal Family. What was her engagement ring like?

Sophie and Prince Edward shared the happy news in a statement made by Buckingham Palace in January 1999.

It read: “The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are delighted to announce the engagement of their youngest son, Prince Edward, to Miss Sophie Rhys-Jones.

“The couple sought the permission of their respective parents between Christmas and the New Year.

“Both families are thrilled at the news. No decision has been taken yet regarding the venue and date for the wedding.

“However, Prince Edward and Miss Rhys-Jones hope that it might be possible to use St George’s Chapel, Windsor in the late spring or summer.”

Shortly after sharing details, the couple posed for official photos at St James’s Palace.

It was there that royal fans got a first look at the stunning diamond ring.

The jewel has three diamonds and has a modern setting in white gold.

It features a two-carat central oval diamond which is flanked between two small heart-shaped jewels.

The ring reportedly cost a cool £110,000 and was purchased from Asprey Garrard, now Garrard & Co.

By choosing a ring from that jeweller, Prince Edward could have been making a sweet nod to his family’s history.

Garrard & Co has produced pieces for the Royal Family since 1735.

They were appointed as the Official Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria and have since made items worn by the Queen, Princess Diana and Kate Middleton.

Kate’s famous sapphire engagement ring, which once belonged to Princess Diana, was also a creation of Garrad & Co.

Where is Sophie’s ring now?

Sophie and Prince Edward have been happily married since 1999, but the Countess has recently been spotted without her diamond jewel.

On a number of post-lockdown outings, the mother-of-two has left her engagement ring at home.

However, this could down to personal style and she has still been seen wearing her wedding band.

The band, which she was given on her wedding day, is made from Welsh gold which is in line with royal tradition.
