How to wash linen?

To prevent shrinkage, it's best to avoid hot water when washing linen – so wash on a low temperature in either lukewarm or cold water. Some people also swear by turning linen garments inside out to protect the fibres.

Having said that, you can use warm water if your item has been pre-washed. It's therefore always best to read the care instructions on the label, to be sure.

Once washed, linen is best hung up to air dry, or you can put it in the tumble drier on a medium temperature. Again, be sure to check the label first.

Does linen crease?

Linen does have a tendency to wrinkle pretty easily – but arguably that's all part of its charm and natural look.

That being said, it's a good idea to smooth out your linen garments before you leave them to air dry which will help prevent deep-set creases.

You can also iron it on a low temperature when still slightly damp for a totally crisp look.

Does linen shrink?

Linen naturally shrinks after its first wash, so for that reason, many garments are pre-washed to minimise further shrinkage.

If your item hasn't been pre-washed, then as above – make sure you run your first wash in cold water.

Does linen stretch?

Pure linen doesn't stretch – but if it's been blended with other stretchy fabrics, then it will do so.

The reason pure linen doesn't stretch? It's made of plant-based fibres, and so just like an overwatered plant that becomes flimsy and soft – linen fibres 'relax' when wet, and can have a tendency to shrink rather than stretch.

Does linen show sweat?

How sweaty are we talking?

But no, in all seriousness: linen is a great choice in warmer weather as it's made from loosely woven natural fibres that make it ultra-absorbent and quick drying.

So you can confidently wear it on the most packed-out of rush-hour commutes, safe in the knowledge that you'll stay cool as a cucumber.

Is linen sustainable?

Yes, it is! Linen is made from flax – and as the majority of the plant can be woven into a fibre, there's virtually no waste.

If you're looking to make a purchase that's as sustainable as possible, you can also keep an eye out for linens that have been organically processed: this means they won't have been manufactured with chemicals or dyes, plus contribute less to water pollution. Result!
