In a statement shortly after the birth was announced, Buckingham Palace said Meghan and her baby were ‘both doing well’, and that the Queen and other members of the royal family were ‘delighted’ with the news.
Meghan is now recovering at Frogmore Cottage, the couple’s home set within the grounds of Windsor Castle, with attentions now turning to the baby’s name, which Harry referred to ‘the next bit’ of his newfound parenthood.
The Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland is currently by her side at Frogmore Cottage, suggesting that Meghan had undergone a home birth as planned.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son is seventh-in-line to the British throne.

The baby boy comes behind their father Prince Harry in the line of succession, bumping his uncle, the Duke of York, Prince Andrew further down the line into eighth place.
But the child will not be given the title of prince and he will instead be known as the Earl of Dumbarton.
Prince Harry is expected to take two weeks of ‘unofficial paternity leave’ to spend with his wife and child, which is the same amount of time working fathers get in the UK.
This is not ‘official’ leave as he isn’t in a named post like his previous role as Captain in the Army, but he’s expected to take time away from official royal duties.
His official visit to The Netherlands on May 9 to launch the one-year countdown to the 2020 Invictus Games in The Hague may cut into his time off, however he could choose to add a few extra days on at the end.

Harry’s full statement from the Windsor estate
‘Yes I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself have had a baby boy early this morning, a healthy boy.
‘Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It’s been the most amazing experience I can ever have possibly imagined.
‘How any woman does that, what they do is beyond comprehension.
‘We’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful to all the love and support of everybody out there, it’s been amazing so I just wanted to share this with everybody
‘Still thinking about names but, yeah, the baby is a little overdue so we’ve had a little bit of time to think about it – but that’s the next bit.
‘We’ll be able to see you in two days’ time as planned and be able to share it with you as a family and share it with you guys and so everyone can see the baby.’
‘I haven’t been at many births, this is definitely my first birth – it was amazing, absolutely incredible and as I said, I’m so incredible proud of my wife and as every father and parent would ever say, your baby is absolutely amazing, so this little thing is absolutely to die for so I’m over the moon.
‘Thank you very much guys, thank you.’
