I moved in with my parents after I left my violent ex – but I feel lost

DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN I left my violent ex-partner I lost everything – my house, belongings, the lot.

I had to move in with my parents. It was only meant to be a short-term solution but I have now been here for almost a year and it is really starting to grate.

I feel so useless and it’s really getting me down.

I have been looking for a room to rent but there is nothing available. All I want is a little independence.

As a woman of 36, I have a pathetic existence. I don’t go out anywhere except to work and feel so lonely.

I also lost all my friends because of my ex. It’s as though my life is over and this is the way things will be from now on.

DEIDRE SAYS: You were brave to get away from your former partner.

But it is bound to feel tough and as though you’ve taken a step backwards.

Please believe that things can improve, even if only little by little, and you will get to where you want to be.
