Meghan Markle feels obliged to keep up appearances, says body language expert

Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry attended an event to honour veterans in New York ahead of Remembrance Day.

The couple put on a united front after a busy few days which included the emails and texts that they'd sent to their former close adviser Jason Knauf emerging in court, leading to Meghan apologising for forgetting that she gave OK for aide to brief Finding Freedom authors.

Psychologist and Body language expert Darren Stanton spoke to OK! on behalf of Coffee Friend, and explained how their appearance at the Salute To Freedom Gala at Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum could suggest their enjoying their life outside the royal family despite everything going on around them.

“In their new world of freedom, the two are able to happily go about ‘normal life’ with less protocol and tradition.

"Meghan and Harry are enjoying holding hands. Whereas in the Royal family, this isn't often done."

As senior royals they had higher standards to adhere to when in public, and packing on the public displays of affection was not always an option. There are unofficial rules that his brother Prince William and wife Kate Middleton still often comply by.

Darren also noted their different facial expressions.

"We see a difference between Prince Harry and Meghan in their expressions. He has opted to adopt a more sombre facial expression, while Meghan has a very large smile."

He continued, "On the red carpet, Meghan also responds to a couple of press questions. When asked if she’s proud of Harry, she replied, “I’m always proud of him".

"This appears very sincere by her gesture and tone of her voice. While Harry, consistent with his view of the press, chooses to decline interacting. Meghan in this instance still feels obliged to keep up appearances, whereas Harry is very keen to stick by his morals.”

While Darren also believed Meghan subtly presented herself as important to the evening.

"The amount of space a person occupies is also linked to how important they perceive themselves to be.

"On many red carpet events people often stand with their hands on their hips. They will spread their legs or make a wide stance. This is a psychological expression to grab more attention by covering more of people’s view," Darren explained.

"Meghan is occupying a great deal of space with the long train of her dress and wants to convey the importance that she places upon their attendance.”
