The Ashes: Michael Vaughan slams ‘mentally shot’ England for humiliating First Test defeat – The Sun

ENGLAND’S Ashes flops were humiliated by Australia in a final-day surrender.

Legends queued up to pile into Joe Root’s side following a 251-run defeat.

Vaughan led England as they famously ended 18 years of hurt to regain the urn in 2005.

He fears this series could turn into a “mess” and Australia may “wipe the floor” with the hosts.

Vaughan, 44, said: “It’s the mentality I have concerns about for two or three of them.

“Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler look a bit shot to me.

“I worry about this England side because the World Cup was massive for them and will have taken it out of them.”

England were bowled out for just 146 before tea, having needed to bat out the final day to save the First Test.

Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon took 6-49 and Steve Smith was man of the match after 286 runs across his two innings.

Vaughan said: “If the ball doesn’t move laterally, this series has mess written all over it for England.”

Former coach David Lloyd said some of Root’s side seem to be in the “doldrums”.

But captain Root moved to calm the critics.

He said: “We’ll make sure in the next few days we don’t make any shotgun decisions.

“It’s very easy to make emotional decisions now.

“But we’ve got to make sure we’re very clear about how we approach the next game at Lord’s.”

Yet iconic Yorkshire batsman Geoffrey Boycott blasted: “Root should be hurting and disappointed.

“It’s a PR exercise — smiling and looking nice, being a good loser.

“But you don’t want good losers — you want good winners. They have to change their attitude.”

Warwickshire legend Bob Willis said: “It was gruesome viewing.

“Joe calls it disappointing — it’s unsatisfactory.

“It was very, very poor Test match cricket. England at the moment are not a good Test side.”

The hosts will name their squad for next Wednesday’s Second Test at Lord’s later this week.

Moeen could be dropped with Jack Leach returning.

Jofra Archer will replace Jimmy Anderson if he gets through a three-dayer for Sussex second XI, which starts today.

Australia great Shane Warne insisted: “All the questions are in the England camp — I think they’ll start to worry.”

The tourists sang Sweet Caroline in their dressing room after the victory — and Aussie legend Glenn McGrath even predicted a 5-0 whitewash.

But Root insists his team can bounce back.
