Tidy like Marie Kondo and spark joy with savings by using our top tips

TIDYING queen Marie Kondo’s new Netflix show Sparking Joy starts this week.

To celebrate, I spoke to Sue Spencer, a professional home organiser and KonMari consultant, who was trained by the TV guru herself.

Because clearing up can ensure tidy savings . . .

CHECK YOUR STOCKS: See what’s in your food cupboard then write a shopping list or meal plan to use the items you have. Store similar items together so you can see at a glance what you have. You can use Tupperware or even shoe boxes and ice-cream tubs.

DON’T BUY TWICE: We often waste time and money buying new because we cannot find what we already have around the home, or forgot we had it. It may be some sticky tape, a book, make-up or clothes. Find a place for everything so it is then easier to find them and, more importantly, to replace if needs be.

USE UP YOUR STASH: If you store toiletries and cleaning products in different places around your home, you may have spares you have forgotten about. Gather the items together to see exactly what you have, including all those half-finished bottles and other containers. Find a home for your stash, then gradually use it up before you buy more. A way to use every last drop of product from a tube is to cut the end off and scoop out the last of the lotion.

SORT PAPERWORK: Tackle those messy piles of paperwork and it will help you save on unnecessary subscriptions, late payments fees and interest charges. Plus you’ll have a better idea of your monthly outgoings. Some subscriptions you may just like to pause. Check for gift vouchers, too, in case still valid.

STORE AND SAVE: Buy Christmas and birthday gifts early if items are on offer. Make a list of the people you usually buy for and keep track of what you have bought so you do not double up. Remember where you stored what you have bought — maybe a gift drawer or a cupboard shelf — for when you want to wrap it.
