The new year is all about looking at your life, embracing what works, deciding what doesn’t, and trying to make the changes to get to where you want to be. And for many of us, that means focussing on the search for that special someone.
But it isn’t easy. So new! turned to Anna Williamson, one of E4’s love experts, who has helped many TV favourites find a date on the star-studded matchmaking show, Celebs Go Dating.
So, as we enter a new year, here are coach and dating expert Anna’s top tips on how to take that leap of faith and get back out there. Lasting happiness could be just around the corner. You just need to know where to look for it!
The first thing I always say is get your head in the dating game. You can’t go into it half-heartedly. If you’re less than 100%, you need to do some more work on yourself and figure out what it is you’re looking for and why you are wanting to date. Is it companionship, marriage, settling down or are you really just looking to be friends with benefits?
We’re all fatigued after Covid, so it’s all about getting your head in the space and remembering you attract what you radiate. If you’re not going into it 100%, then take a break.
Don’t give up on internet dating
Dating apps and websites can get overwhelming. So once you’ve got your intentions set, be selective and don’t spread yourself too thin. Sign up for perhaps one app and one website and concentrate on them.
Be specific in your biography and be clear about what you want and don’t want. Don’t make a big list of what you’re not looking for, but what you ARE looking for. If it’s marriage or friends with benefits, say it!
If you’re more honest about your intentions, you’ll attract someone who has equal intentions. Remember, it’s good to get that first physical date set up before the online conversation wains.
Get out there
Online dating will never completely replace the thrill of meeting someone in real life. Have a look in your local area for groups or clubs that might interest you.
If there’s a hobby you might be interested in, not only would you be furthering one of your passions, you’re more likely to meet someone who has the same values and interests as you.
Forget about types
If I could ban one sentence, it would be “My type on paper.” It’s the most limiting sentence we can say to ourselves in the dating world. By sticking to very stringent boxes you want to tick, you’re throwing out 98% of potential, eligible people.
Ask most people you know whether they’ve married and settled down with their “type” and they’ll say no.
With the rise of internet dating, we’ve all forgotten how to approach a potential match in public.
If you want to say hello in a friendly way when you see someone you fancy in public, then go do it. If your intentions are honest and genuine then go for it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Ask your mates
Back in the day, most matches were made by introductions from friends and family. So don’t be afraid to ask your network around you to introduce you to eligible matches. The bonus is, your friends will have already done some of the digging work for you. If they like and trust them, it says a lot about who that person is.
Celebs Go Dating will return to E4 in 2022. For more exclusive interviews and features, sign up to OK! newsletters here.
