6pm Arsenal news LIVE: Mertens linked, Arteta takes first training, Xhaka ‘agrees Hertha transfer’, AFTV blasted by fans – The Sun

MIKEL ARTETA is the new Arsenal manager – but may be wondering just how he will change the fortunes at the Emirates.

The Spaniard will have been pleased with an improved defensive display but know he has work to do after watching a dour 0-0 draw at Everton.

Meanwhile, former Gunners captain Granit Xhaka could be among the first on their way out of the Emirates after agreeing a transfer move to Hertha Berlin.

  • Arsenal’s shambolic season rolls on as they find themselves in the bottom half at Christmas for first time since 1983.

A point at Goodison Park means that Arsenal will spend Christmas day in the bottom half of the table.

New head coach Mikel Arteta has a sizeable job on his hands with misfiring strikers, a lack of leadership and blunder after blunder in the backline.

A trip to misfiring Bournemouth awaits on Boxing Day and Arsenal will fancy their chances, with the Cherries having only won once in their last seven games.

  • MIKEL ARTETA needs to sort out Arsenal's dodgy defence – but without showing off his own tackle this time.

Lee Dixon, 55, joked the new Gunners boss needs to “put his willy away” after an ill-timed photograph from training surfaced online.

Arsenal fans have been reminiscing about Arteta's playing days after he was announced as the new manager on Friday.

One fan decided to share some pics from his time in north London – where he played from 2011 until 2016.

Club legend Alan Smith quoted the tweet and wrote: “Loving these pics!”

But Dixon, who spent 14 years with Arsenal,  decided to troll the former Manchester City boss.

The 55-year-old mistook Arteta's finger for his penis as it cheekily poked out from behind his shorts.

He wrote: “MA needs to put his willy away!”

One shocked fan replied: “That photo is now ruined, cheers Lee.”

Another added: “Now that, right there, is huge power play.”

  • FANS of Manchester United and Arsenal will be excited by Napoli star Dries Mertens' latest Instagram post.

The forward hinted at a goodbye to the Italian city on social media, and is expected to leave as early as January after a dressing room rift.

Napoli fans flooded the comments fearing an exit, with one saying “Dries please stay” and another telling him “Dries you are Neopolitan, don't go away.”

Mertens is likely to leave Napoli, possibly as early as January, after being fined £145,000 for his part in a revolt against Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Players at the club refused to take part in a special training camp organised by the owner in an attempt to improve recent poor results.

If Arsenal manage to land Mertens in the summer, he would become new boss Mikel Arteta's first signing.

Former Arsenal captain Arteta was confirmed on Friday as the new head coach at the Emirates, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Mertens has played over 200 times for Napoli since joining in 2013, but it is thought that he may be available in January for as little as £8.5 million.
