The 145th Kentucky Derby has seen its share of drama in the run-up to the race, with two scratches (Omaha Beach and Haikal) and a major jockey change for Cutting Humor from Corey Lanerie to Mike Smith. But the field is now set and the race Saturday at Churchill Downs sets up for a muddy, sloppy competitive affair. Here's how the Courier Journal staff sees it shaking down, from the horse in the winner's circle, others on the board and long shots.
On the board:Improbable, Game Winner
I'm a sucker for a story, and Roadster's is one of the best – from 2-year-old phenom to throat surgery to qualifying for the Kentucky Derby in his last chance. – Jason Frakes
On the board: Game Winner, Tacitus, Win Win Win
I’ll take Roadster over Game Winner to complete the Bob Baffert exacta with the closers Tacitus and Win Win Win running onto the board late. The distance and rainy conditions are a question mark, but I just like Roadster’s upside. I think there is another gear there for the Derby. – Gentry Estes
