The German Darts Masters has, so far, eluded Van Gerwen on his two previous attempts.
The Dutchman will travel to Cologne where he will face Martin Schindler in the opening round on Friday night.
World number two Rob Cross will be among those to offer Van Gerwen with his toughest competition and he faces Max Hopp in his opener.
Meanwhile, 2017 champion Peter Wright will face Robert Marijanovic in front of his home crowd.
Cross and Van Gerwen have been kept apart initially, but provided they keep winning will end up meeting in the last four.
