Golf betting tips and free bets: Three picks for the Rocket Mortgage Classic including 80/1 shot | The Sun

BACKING golfers with Cameron in their name has been a winning formula recently, with Smith doing us a big favour at the Open by beating Young.

And following the theory that ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, Cameron Davis is the top tip this week to retain the Rocket Mortgage Classic title he won in Detroit 12 months ago.

Davis faces stiff competition, with Open runner-up Cameron Young – who is due an off week after five top three finishes this year – and world No 4 Patrick Cantlay both returning to action.

Cantlay rewarded each way backers at St Andrews by finishing in a share of eighth. Even though he is a clear favourite this time, 11-1 still looks pretty tempting, especially with most bookies paying top eight again.

He finished in the top four in three of his six previous starts before the Open, and his FedEx Cup triumph a year ago proved the man from Long Beach in California definitely comes into his own in the summertime

He makes far more appeal than second favourite Tony Finau. His 3M Open win last week was far from convincing, and he has never looked like a player capable of winning back-to-back events.

I keep coming back to Cantlay, but playing with ‘house money’ after successful tips at the Scottish Open and St Andrews means it may be worth looking for a bit more value lower down the list.

Tips for Rocket Mortgage Classic

Hot shot: Cameron Davis, 30-1.

Davis eventually won this last year by seeing off Troy Merritt in a five hole play-off, and like fellow Aussie Cameron Smith, he is in a nice groove at the moment.

A share of 16th at last week’s 3M Open was a more than acceptable warm-up for his title defence, and his two previous efforts were a tiew for eighth at the John Deere and sixth at the Barracuda Championship.

At these odds, Davis looks terrific each way value.

Mid price: Kevin Kisner, 35-1

Kisner was always going to be on my short list for this event, even before he followed up his sixth place at the Travelers Championship by finishing tied 21st at St Andrews. After finishing joint runner-up at Carnoustie, he is one to watch at future Opens.

Kisner is clearly back in the sort of form that took him to the final of the World Match Play Championship at the end of March, where he was unlucky to run  into a red hot Scottie Sheffler.

Kisner was a close third in this event two years ago, and followed up by finishing eighth last year. Again, that screams each way value to me.

Long shot: Harris English, 80-1.

English is one of the class acts in this field at 33rd in the world rankings – the man who won twice on the PGA Tour last year would be a fair bit higher if he had not missed most of the season after undergoing wrist surgery.

This will be only his eighth start of the year, and he needs a couple of good weeks to push himself into the FedEx Cup reckoning.

English showed enough with a top twenty finish at the Travelers to suggest he is ready to make up for lost time.

His trip to the UK for the Scottish Open and the real thing was hardly a great success, but this will be more his cup of tea.
