THE Wells Fargo Championship is here this week as the top players in the world gear up for the PGA Championship later this month.
And the field is strong with Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy all pitching up at Quail Hollow.
And our man David Facey makes his three picks for the event.
Hot tip: Justin Thomas, 11-1.
Hard to see why the world No 2 is not a clear favourite here – he shares top spot with Jon Rahm – after his 2017 USPGA Championship victory at Quail Hollow when it was playing even tougher than usual.
He won by two shots, despite opening with a two over par 73.
Most of his rivals at the top end of the market have question marks against them, and while Thomas has hardly been a model of consistency himself, he has posted an impressive victory at The Players.
A share of seventh on his Wells Fargo debut back in 2015 underlines his liking for the track.
Mid price: Brian Harman, 40-1.
By all rights Quail Hollow should be too long for the short-hitting Harman, who won the Wells Fargo when it was switched to Eagle Point four years ago, so that the usual venue could be prepped for the USPGA.
But he has shown he can hang tough on big boy courses.
He was just a shot away from making the top ten when Thomas won the USPGA, and only an uncharacteristically ragged 75 in the second round prevented him fighting out the finish here two years ago.
He shot three rounds in the 60s to finish T21.
Arrives in good form. Has finished in the top 15 in last four starts, including third at the World Match Play.
Long shot: Joel Dahmen, 70-1
Runner-up to Max Homa here in 2019 – the last time the event was staged, as it fell victim to the coronavirus shutdown last year – after finishing T16 on his debut 12 months earlier, and has ducked below par in seven of his eight rounds over this course.
That includes a sizzling 66-66 start in 2019, so could also be worth an interest on the first round leader market. His worst round was a level par 71 in 2018, so definitely fits into the horses for courses bracket.
Won the Corales Championship in March, and even though the world’s top 64 were playing in the Match Play that week, a win is a win.
