Man Utd ‘sent scouts to watch Flamengo star Joao Gomes, 21, but backroom staff stunned by OWN player Andreas Pereira’

MANCHESTER UNITED sent scouts to watch Flamengo youngster Joao Gomes – but were more taken with Andreas Pereira, according to reports.

The Red Devils are aiming to bolster their squad following the arrival of new boss Erik ten Hag.

Talent spotters were sent to Brazil to evaluate midfielder Gomes.

But according to ESPN, scouts came away more impressed by one of United's OWN players.

Pereira has spent the bulk of the last two years out on loan, first at Lazio and then at Flamengo.

He has impressed with the latter and is due back at United for pre-season next month.

Scouts posted to watch Gomes noted Pereira as Flamengo's most eyecatching performer.

A permanent move to the Brazilian side has so far fallen through and the forgotten man could be handed an Old Trafford lifeline.

Pereira, 26, is determined to play regular first-team football but hasn't given up on returning to prominence at United.

The Brazilian made 75 appearances for the Red Devils before being deemed surplus to requirements under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ten Hag knows Pereira from his time at PSV and believes that he could be useful at United.

The 52-year-old has reportedly identified his energy and technical ability as traits that could bolster his squad.

United's new boss believes that his midfield needs massive strengthening, particularly given the departures of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic.

The Dutchman is likely to at least take a look at Pereira during pre-season.

Upon his return to Old Trafford, the one-cap international will have 12 months remaining on his United contract.
