Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar is accused of propositioning a woman for sex and pressing his body into hers without consent while working for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014, according to a report in the Toronto Star.
Melissa Verge was an 18-year-old volunteer at a youth baseball camp run by the Blue Jays at the time. She is the second woman in a month’s span to allege sexual misconduct against Alomar, who retired in 2005 after playing for eight MLB teams including the Mets and was 46 years old in 2014.
The Blue Jays are investigating the incident and the team’s response after Verge’s claim she told Rob Jack, a team official at the time and a friend of Alomar’s, about the incident. The Blue Jays said Jack did not notify other members of the organization or human resources about the allegations, per the report. Jack was fired by the team in 2015 and reportedly began working for Alomar.
MLB fired Alomar as a consultant to the league office and placed him on the ineligible list in April after an employee earlier this year alleged sexual misconduct on his part in a separate incident in 2014. An external law firm was hired to conduct an investigation. Verge told the Toronto Star that the first unidentified woman sharing her story encouraged her to come forward.
“Having reviewed all of the available evidence from the now completed investigation,” commissioner Rob Manfred said in April, “I have concluded that Mr. Alomar violated MLB’s policies, and that termination of his consultant contract and placement on MLB’s ineligible list are warranted.”
The Blue Jays also recently cut ties with Alomar before this second incident came to light.
Verge alleged Alomar rubbed up against her in the team’s weight room while giving her a tour of the clubhouse and other facilities during the camp. She said she walked away but he wrapped his arm tight around her, gave her his phone number and asked her to keep the incident quiet. When Alomar later asked her to join him in his hotel room, she was scared, shaking and near tears, according to the report.
Verge’s account was confirmed to the Sun by her then-boyfriend, parents and a college professor, who all said she told them of the incident within months of it allegedly taking place. Alomar and Jack did not respond to the Star’s requests for comment.
