The Queen celebrates Platinum Jubilee weekend with £6,000 horse winner despite missing her favourite race at Epsom

THE QUEEN didn't have a runner in the Epsom Derby – but she still celebrated a nice winner on Derby day.

And it was a rare victory over jumps for Her Majesty, who did not attend her favourite race during the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

Top trainer Nicky Henderson and his jockey Nico De Boinville combined to guide Steal A March to victory at Worcester.

There was nowhere near the sizeable crowd or celebration we saw at Epsom when the seven-year-old won the 2m7f handicap hurdle.

But every victory in her silks means something to the 96-year-old monarch – and with this one came a cheque for just over £6,000.

It was a sweet triumph for Hendo and De Boinville, especially since Steal A March was poor on chase debut at Bangor last month.

The move back to hurdles proved just the trick.

De Boinville told the Racing Post: "It was a very special win and a big honour to ride for Her Majesty on this weekend.

"It was fantastic and great that the boss and Seven Barrows team could produce him in great form for today.

"There was a huge crowd and they really got behind the royal colours while having such a great day out, which was fantastic to see.

"I had two wins on Barbers Shop and Her Majesty actually gave me my first two winners over jumps as an amateur.

"We go back a while and I'm really grateful for what she's done for my career."

Her Majesty has been suffering 'episodic' mobility issues in recent weeks.

That meant she couldn't take up her usual spot overlooking Epsom racecourse for her favourite race.

The Queen looked to have a live chance in Reach For The Moon, until he was withdrawn due to a setback.

Desert Crown was a decisive winner in the £1.5m race for iconic trainer Sir Michael Stoute and jockey Richard Kingscote.
