A Place In The Sun has given us a major dose of heartwarming TV after widower John found his dream home with the help of his best friend Ruth.
It had been John’s dream to live in Spain for decades and he revealed it was finally time to make it a reality.
John, who looked for a home in inland Malaga with a budget of around £140,000, met his best friend Ruth online, after both of their spouses died.
‘His face cropped up as one of my admirers,’ she joked, with her making it clear she was planning on visiting him if he bought a house.
With presenter Danni Menzies showing the pair a range of houses, from one-storey fincas and a townhouse to an apartment in a complex on a golf course, there were plenty of options.
John eventually settled for one of the one-storey fincas, with stunning views across the hills.
‘I decided to put an offer in,’ he told Danni when she asked if he’d made a decision, telling her he was ‘very nervous but very excited.’
Revealing that his first offer was £135,000, he eventually settled on £141,000 after an exchange with the sellers.
John looked over the moon as he celebrated, giving Ruth a sweet kiss on the cheek.
Viewers were clearly happy for him, with one writing on Twitter: ‘Aww love John @DanniMenzies so pleased he bought it.’
‘What a lovely chap. Really enjoyed this episode,’ another said, while one more added: ‘John is a nice guy in today’s programme.’
Elsewhere this week, the show saw heartbreak as one couple – Gary and Claire – were forced to walk away from their dream home due to a health battle.
They had fallen in love with a townhouse but during their search, Claire suffered a flare-up of fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that causes pain all over the body.
The couple made the hard decision that it wasn’t a good idea for her to be walking up stairs all the time, and chose to wait another six months to save more money for a bungalow.
A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 4pm on Channel 4.
