BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker blasts Strictly fix claims after Mike Bushell saved

Dan Walker has hit back at claims his BBC Breakfast colleague Mike Bushell is the subject of a Strictly Come Dancing fix, after the presenter was saved from the dance-off for the third successive week.

Despite registering a respectable score of 30 from the judges on Saturday night’s show, Mike found himself in the bottom two with Viscountess Emma Weymouth for yesterday evening's results show.

But, for the third week in a row, the news anchor and partner Katya Jones were saved by the judges.

Fans quickly flocked to Twitter to voice their outrage, particularly given the fact they had made mistakes in their performance.

Many even bizarrely claimed the show was “fixed” to keep the BBC presenter.

The controversy was brought up on BBC Breakfast today and a furious Dan was quick to unleash a rant at the claims.

Dan, 42, raged: “I’m getting increasingly annoyed with people giving [Mike] grief.

“Some of it is getting a bit cruel. All he's doing is enjoying himself.

“He's trying really hard and all four of the judges said he was the better performer in the dance-off than the Viscountess who went home."

The presenter than directly addressed the unfounded suggestions that Strictly bosses were keeping Mike in the competition simply because he was a BBC man.

“He's certainly not being kept in there because he's working for the BBC,” Dan said.

“That's a ridiculous accusation.”

Mike first found himself in the dance-off back in Week 5, where he managed to beat former England goalkeeper David James and his partner Nadiya Bychkova.

Then, last week, he managed to beat Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley and partner Johannes Radebe.

Speaking on their decision to save Mike, judge Craig Revel Horwood said: "Well, for me the most challenging and the better dance, I thought on this particular performance for me, I'd like to save Mike and Katya."

Motsi Mabuse – who is making her debut on the judging panel this year – agreed and added: "I'm going to choose a couple which I think everything they did was much clearer to read, much easier to follow and more prepared. I

"I'm going to go with Mike and Katya."

And Bruno Tonioli said: "Purely based on tonight's performance, more entertaining, richer, more powerful and something extraordinary happened, the celebrity actually covered for the professional's mistake; Mike and Katya.

After making it through once again on Sunday night’s result show, Mike tweeted: “Thank you for great feedback tonight.

“I did my best and as from week one I can’t wait for next week.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.
