Netflix series Dark has one of the largest casts of any drama on the streaming platform. The German thriller told a tale of three families, woven in a rich knot with various story threads creating a rich tapestry. But many viewers are curious to know about the fate of Ulrich Nielsen (played by Oliver Masucci).

Did Ulrich Nielsen get trapped in the past in Dark season 3?

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Dark season 3

Flawed and philandering police detective Ulrich was determined to find his son Mikkel Nielsen (Daan Lennard Liebrenz) in Dark season one.

Ulrich quickly figured out he needed to travel through time to find Mikkel and bring him back to the present.

However, his attempt to traverse various eras went very wrong after Ulrich got stuck in the 1950s after attacking Helge Doppler (Tom Philipp).

He believed Helge was the source of the problem and by killing him, Mikkel would never disappear.

Instead, his actions were simply part of the endless knot of events which bound him tightly into the family tree and infinite loop leading to the apocalypse.

Ulrich ended up getting arrested by the police with Egon Tiedemann (Sebastian Hülk) trying to figure out his real identity but failing to do so until it was too late.

At one point, Hannah Kahnwald (Maja Schöne) travelled back to the 1950s and for a moment it looked like she was Ulrich’s ticket out of prison.

Ever the vindictive spirit, she chose to leave her former lover behind bars and started an affair with Egon.

Later, Ulrich was thrown in a mental asylum and kept there until the 1980s.

He briefly managed to reunite with his son Mikkel as they tried to get back to the Winden Caves and travel through time.

Sadly, the pair were caught and Ulrich (Winfried Glatzeder) was sent back to his mental hospital to languish for eternity.

There was again briefly hope in season three after Ulrich’s wife Katharina Nielsen (Jördis Triebel) travelled back in time to find Mikkel and her husband.

While Mikkel seemed to have vanished forever, she found Ulrich and promised to get him out of the asylum.

But in a twist worthy of a Greek tragedy, Katharina was murdered by her own mother Helene Albers (Katharina Spiering).

Ulrich was seen waiting patiently as the hours ticked by and Katharina’s promise of a rescue never came.

As viewers never saw Ulrich after this point, the suggestion was this version of him died in the past.

The storyline was quite a tragic one for Ulrich. Despite being an incredibly flawed character, he was also a bereft father trying to find his young son.

On the flipside, in world two, Ulrich didn’t lead such a traumatic life because his son never went missing.

The second version of Ulrich was having an affair with Charlotte Doppler (Karoline Eichhorn) after divorcing from his wife Katharina.

He had a frosty relationship with his children Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari) and Magnus (Moritz Jahn), who had little time for him after he walked out on his family.

Ulrich was married to Hannah and she was expected their child. But she soon realised Ulrich and Charlotte were having an affair.

In both worlds, the recurring theme seemed to be Ulrich and Hannah’s self-destructive behaviour and self-loathing.
