The season finale of Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood has left thousands of viewers in tears after an emotional ending saw the demise of a fan-favourite. Fans were left in shock at the finale and took to social media to share their reaction.
After the original season of Dexter came to an end in 2013, tons of viewers were left grumbling at the unexpected ending.
The conversation about its finale soon came to an end after it was announced the reboot Dexter: New Blood would hit the screens in November.
The series followed Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C Hall) who had supposedly gone missing in Hurricane Laura, but instead, he faked his death and started a new life.
However, this all came to a screeching halt in the season finale, when Dexter met his death at the hands of his son, Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott).
In the emotional scene, Harrison pulled out a firearm and killed his father, he blamed Dexter for what resulted in the lives of his mother Rita Morgan (Julie Benz) and his aunt Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter).
Fans watched in tears as Dexter said his final words and told his son: “You deserve better. A better life. A better father,” before reminding Harrison to take the safety off the gun.
In the next scene, Dexter was dead on the ground as his blood seeped out of his chest and covered the snow.
Fans were distraught to see Dexter meet his death this way and took to social media to share their reaction.
Fragilespector tweeted: “The ending to Dexter New Blood has me in TEARS. He finally felt real love in the end.”
Bumblevee wrote: “Seeing the finale of Dexter has me in literal tears. So sad to see it end, but it couldn’t have ended any other way.”
Moonlitefire added: “F******g Dexter I’m crying real tears right now.”
MadisonHooker agreed: “Okay, crying over the ending of Dexter. I thought the last time was bad, why would they do this to us?!”
The new reboot reintroduced Dexter to fans as Jim Lindsay, a shopkeeper from the quiet town of Iron Lake, New York.
Which was a far cry from his role as a Forensic Blood Splatter Analyst in Miami, where he was also leading a double life as a serial killer.
However, in New York, he had become a well-known member of the close-knit community and no one knew anything about his past.
In the eight years since he had left Miami and faked his death, Dexter hadn’t done any killing only to be killed in the finale.
In an interview with Deadline, Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips explained why Dexter’s death was necessary.
He stated: “‘We knew this had to happen, and I think it had to happen for the audience as much as for the character.
“To see him get caught time and time again and get out of it at a time and time again is a disservice to the audience.
“And I think there’s a certain truth in this storytelling, in authenticity in the storytelling,” Clyde concluded.
Dexter: New Blood is available to stream on Showtime in America and on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
