Family Guys addresses cutting out 'gay jokes' and we're stumped

Family Guy’s latest episode addressed whether the comedy will stop making ‘gay jokes’ in the vaguest way possible suggesting that they could be backtracking.

Execs Alec Sulkin and Rich Appel revealed back in January that the controversial cartoon would begin ‘phasing out’ LGBTQ+ punchlines, however the most recent offering has brought their statement into question.

Sunday night’s installment titled Disney’s The Reboot, imagined what the show would be like if Disney bought the network and recreated the whole thing – which included making Quagmire and Joe gay.

‘Oh, hello gay couple who’s constantly jogging,’ Lois said to them in the episode. ‘What are you up to this morning?’

Quagmire replied: ‘Just adopting and pucker-kissing,’ before Joe added: ‘Yeah, we’re network TV gay, so all we can do is adopt children and pucker-kiss, no tongue stuff.

‘Isn’t that right, sweetie?’

Meanwhile, Peter Griffin went to a focus group in order to decide a new direction for the series.

After watching a clip that made light of Peter’s sexuality, one character asked: ‘I thought I read you guys were phasing out gay jokes?’

Peter, however, replied: ‘That quote was taken out of context and widely misunderstood.’

So… are the gay jokes are going to keep on coming?

Earlier this year, Sulkin told TVLine: ‘If you look at a show from 2005 or 2006 and put it side by side with a show from 2018 or 2019, they’re going to have a few differences.

It remains unclear how Family Guy intended Peter’s ‘wildly misunderstood’ comment, so we’ll have to stay tuned.

Family Guy airs on Comedy Central in the US and on ITV2 in the UK.
