This year’s Strictly Come Dancing Grand Final was full of amazing routines, glitz and glamour as the remaining couples each performed three dances for their chance to lift the Glitterball Trophy. After being spotted by viewers looking glum when Hamza Yassin was revealed as the winner, Gorka Marquez’s partner Helen Skelton reflected on his reaction.

During an appearance on Lorraine, host Ranvir Singh said to Helen: “You’ve got an amazing sense of humour through everything.”

The presenter asked Helen to comment on a clip of Gorka immediately after the Strictly winner was announced.

“You were gracious,” Ranvir remarked. “Gorka, bless his heart, he was broken after this because [the professionals] wanted him to win.”

Helen compared Gorka’s reaction to a scene from the sitcom Friends where Joey Tribbiani was caught fuming on camera after not winning an acting award.

The Countryfile presenter said: “What I love about Gorka and our friendship is that we are so honest it’s written all over our faces.

“When I was terrified, I was terrified. When we were loving our time together, we were loving our time together. When we were stressed, we were stressed.

“If his face had said anything other than, ‘I’m disappointed’ on Saturday it would have been a disservice.

“I’m not taking anything from Hamza and Jowita, they’ve been brilliant all season and we’re delighted for them.”

She continued: “Gorka’s helped Hamza, he’s given him so many tips in a supportive way, it’s one big family. Bless him, [Gorka] wanted to win it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Helen praised the atmosphere of the Strictly final.

She admitted the support and excitement of the final “would see [her] through dark days”.

Helen took part in Strictly shortly after splitting with her husband Richie Myler.

“Delighted for Hamza and Jowita … gutted for Helen and Gorka… especially Gorka… I hope he will come back again next year and hope he will be given a dancer like the calibre we saw in Helen … till next year #Strictly,” @rantsandcraic wrote.

On Instagram, Gorka shared a sweet tribute to Helen: “Oh where to start. It has been an incredible journey. I feel so grateful I got not only to dance with you Helen Skelton but also to be by your side and see your transformation from day one.

“Thank you for all the memories, laughs, coffees, toast, parent chats and car journeys.

“Like I said yesterday in the show you’re a special person who lights up a room when you walk in and I am so proud you got to smile and shine again.

“I’ve loved every single moment dancing with you and I am so proud of us until the last dance. You’re a star!”

Lorraine airs on ITV on weekdays at 9am. Strictly Come Dancing is available on BBC iPlayer.
