Is 'Shrek' on Disney+? How to Stream Dreamworks Animated Films

When fans think of Dreamworks, Shrek is definitely one of the movies that comes to mind. This animated comedy premiered in 2001 and has been stealing hearts ever since. Is this movie on Disney’s streaming platform? Here’s what we know about Disney+ and its library.

Shrek is a Dreamworks Animation Studios production

The story of an ogre, a talking donkey, and a beautiful princess? More relatable than you think. Dreamworks premiered their animated movie Shrek in 2001, sharing the story of one journey of self-discovery, bravery, love, and friendship.

Since then, Shrek had a few sequels and spinoffs, including the story of Puss in Boots. There’s even a live musical adaptation of this story, being performed in Broadway over 400 times.

In fact, Shrek the Musical is available for streaming on another platform — Netflix. As a result, some fans are wondering how they can watch the original film that inspired the franchise. Unfortunately, Shrek is not available for streaming on Netflix or Disney+. Not yet, anyway.

Is ‘Shrek’ on Disney+ or Netflix?

There’s no word regarding if, or when, movies like Shrek will appear on Disney+. In fact, if you’re holding out for a streamable version of Shrek, turning to Netflix is your best bet. Because Dreamworks is in direct competition with the Walt Disney Company, it makes sense that their titles would be available on Disney’s rival streaming platform.

As a March 2020, Dreamworks Animation Studios movies, including The Bee Movie, Kung Fu Panda 2, Turbo, and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation are available for binge-watching on Netflix. There’s also “Illumination Presents” movies on Netflix, an extension of Dreamworks, with movies like The Grinch and The Secret Life of Pets 2.

For more Shrek and Fiona-related content, there are television shows featuring the characters on Netflix. There’s the first season of Shrek’s Swamp Stories, in addition to the first season of Dreamwork’s Spooky Stories and six seasons of The Adventures of Puss in Boots.

Disney acquired studios like 21st Century Fox, Pixar, and Lucasfilm

It gets a little murky when describing Dreamworks’ relationship with the Walt Disney Company. NBCUniversal, Universal Studios, and Dreamworks are still, and have pretty much always been, a separate entity from Disney. This is not to be confused with 21st Century Fox and ABC, which have since been acquired by Disney.

As a result of Disney’s acquisitions, movies created by Lucasfilm, Marvel, Pixar, National Geographic, and 21st Century Fox are available on their streaming platform. That’s not to mention live-action, animated, and original movies exclusive to Disney’s subscription service.

“What Netflix is doing is making content to support a platform,” former Disney CEO, Bob Iger said, according to a Vanity Fair article. “We’re making content to tell great stories. It’s very different.”
