James Arthur reveals girlfriend's secret ectopic pregnancy after writing song for unborn daughter Emily

JAMES Arthur has revealed his ex girlfriend suffered a secret ectopic pregnancy.

The X Factor star, 33, wrote a song for his unborn daughter, called Emily, while Jessica Girsts was pregnant.

The emotional lyrics include: ''I needed life and life came, and gave me Emily. You make me a better man than I'll ever be, ever be, ever be, because of you Emily.”

Asked if the song is about an unborn daughter, James said: “To be honest, when it first came out I sort of billed it as that, but I spoke to my partner, and at the time it was a realistic prospect. She was pregnant.

“Sadly it didn't work out. It wasn't far, it was a couple of months and she had an ectopic pregnancy. So she lost the child, and I didn't really want to talk about it.

“But she actually said 'I think it's really important that you do' – just because there's so little information, and I would echo that actually.”

Speaking on the Andy Jaye's An Hour With podcast, James admitted he had written the song in the very early stages of pregnancy and probably should have waited a bit longer.

He said: “I remember at the time saying 'So you've got to wait 14 weeks, or whatever it is, before you can even celebrate this, and I was writing the songs about it – I'm going to be a dad.

“I was thinking about having the hopes and fears anybody would have having a child. And sadly it didn't work out.

“But the song was special to us, and we felt like it was one of the stronger songs on the record.

What is an ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilised egg attaches itself to a cavity outside of the uterus (womb).

Most of the time this is on the fallopian tubes, but this can also happen on the ovaries, the cervix (neck to the womb) or another organ inside the pelvis.

The pregnancy can’t be saved if this occurs, and the egg will be removed in an operation or using medicine.

It affects one in every 80 – 90 pregnancies.

What are the signs?

Often there are no symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, and it is usually detected when a mother goes for a routine pregnancy scan.

If you do have symptoms, typically these will start to show between the fourth and 12th month of the pregnancy.

These can include:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Brown watery discharge
  • Pain in your lower abdomen down one side
  • Missed period
  • Discomfort when going to the bathroom
  • Pain in the tip of your shoulder

“And the record label were like ''we think you should release this song' – I guess to say this is a song to my future child which I still would call Emily. So it made sense to put it out like that. I was having a child. I guess it's a bit weird people hearing it.”

Earlier this year The Sun revealed that James has split from Jessica, who he first started dating in 2012 when she worked as a backing dancer on the series of The X Factor James won.

The couple were together until 2015 before splitting and reconciling in 2017.
