Call the Midwife will be back on screens for the holiday period with a Christmas episode. The festive instalment of the show will arrive ahead of season 11, which is expected to air in January 2022. Fans of the hit BBC drama are eager to see their favourite nuns and nurses back at Nonnatus House in Poplar. Viewers will be glad to hear guest star Miriam Margolyes will be one familiar face returning for the special episode. On Monday, the actress chatted about her role in the upcoming instalment of the period drama during an interview on ITV’s This Morning.

Regular Call the Midwife viewers will remember Miriam plays Mother Mildred in the series and featured in several episodes in seasons eight and nine.

Mother Mildred was first introduced as the new Mother Superior at the Mother House in the 2018 Christmas Special.

However, she was missing from the show when it aired its tenth season earlier this year.

Miriam was forced to take a break from the series due to travel restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, fans of the actress will be glad to hear she’ll be returning for the Christmas Special next month.

She chatted about the hit BBC programme with This Morning presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on Monday.

Phillip began by asking Miriam if she’d be appearing in more of Call the Midwife in the future.

Miriam replied: “I’m going to be in the Christmas special. So, I’m very proud to say that.”

Keen to know more, Holly asked: “Have you filmed that yet?”

“I’ve filmed that and I am still the Mother Superior and don’t you forget it!” Miriam exclaimed.

“No, I wouldn’t,” Holly laughed. “Oh, I felt that there. I felt that.”

The presenter went on to ask Miriam what she had planned for her own Christmas this year.

“Heather and I are going to Australia for Christmas,” Miriam explained, with Holly remarking: “Oh how lovely.”

However, Miriam suddenly realised she’s made a mistake, exclaiming: “No we’re not!

“What am I talking about? I’m not going to be in Australia for Christmas. I’m going to be there in January.

“No, because I was just talking about it. No, I’m going to Italy for Christmas,” the actress said, correcting herself.

“Oh lovely,” Phillip said, with Holly laughing: “Either are nice. Both of them would be nice.”

Miriam remarked: “I’m very fond of Australia, but I’m not going there until I do my new series there, which is in January.

“It’s much on my mind because they phoned me this morning,” she explained.

Miriam isn’t the only familiar face fans will see in the Call the Midwife Christmas Special, as Helen George, Leonie Elliott, and Cliff Parisi are all expected to feature in the episode too.

Call the Midwife will return with a Christmas Special this holiday season, with season 11 premiering in 2022.
