Queen of the South surprised everyone at the end of season four when James (played by Peter Gadiot) made a surprise return to the show after being gone for an entire season. In one of the biggest cliffhangers to date for the USA Network show, a wounded James walked up to Teresa (Alice Braga) to warn her: “They’re coming for you.” Now, with the final season on the horizon, one of the show’s stars has revealed what the reunion will bring for the two.
Season five is about to bring about some of the most challenging times for Teresa, especially in the love department.
In a recent interview, Braga said: “The cartel world is very harsh, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.”
“In this world, love weakens you. It puts you in a very dangerous situation because it can be used against you, to hurt you,” continued the actress.
Braga’s menacing words seem to tease an unpleasant ending to Teresa’s journey.
Could her reunion with James be the cause of her death and the end of the series?
However, this isn’t something new for Teresa as Alice continued: “This happened to Teresa already in season 4 when they killed [her godson] Tony to hurt her.
“Season five will show a harsher Teresa and her struggles with James’ return and coping with the loss of her godson,” added Braga to Entertainment Weekly.
Over the course of season four, Teresa lost the morality that prevented her from ascending to Queen of the cartel.
Surely she will not hesitate to take any measure needed to protect herself and James?
James, on the other hand, will have to discover just how much Teresa has changed since he left.
The last time fans saw James was at the end of season three when he was hurt that Teresa accuses him of being a mole since he was constantly putting himself in danger to protect her.
He decided to leave and join Devon Finch (Jamie Hector), who in turn works with the CIA, in order to protect Teresa and repay their debt to him, but told her he doesn’t want to be working for someone “who questions his loyalty.”

Series co-executive producer Ben Lobato has also teased viewers will discover what James has been doing to pay off his debt to Finch and why he is now risking his life again to warn Teresa of an impending threat.
But while James’s surprise return will upend Teresa’s life, he will be faced with the realisation that she is not the same woman he left.
Throughout the time that James was away, Teresa has shed the innocence she has at the start of the show.
She knows there is no getting out anymore so she fully embraces her role running a drug cartel and fully transforms into a Queen with her white power suit.
Her newfound power and influence will be vital in James’s recovery as a preview clip for season five shows James in a bed with Teresa by his side.
She reveals they are in a safe house and they had a doctor come in to perform surgery on him but the bullet that hit him didn’t damage any organs.
However, Teresa’s men quickly start questioning James and his loyalty after he admits to having worked for Finch.
Nobody knows what to make of his reappearance and the question about his loyalties is sure to haunt Teresa throughout the season.
Queen on the South returns with season five on April 7 on USA Network.
