Queen of the South is filled with unexpected deaths, including those of some of the most notorious characters who have helped shape the show. One of which is Don Epifanio (played by Joaquim de Almeida) who caused plenty of trouble during his time in the USA Network series. So what was the reason behind the death of the drug boss?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Queen of the South.
Don Epifanio was first introduced as the boss of Teresa Mendoza’s (Alice Braga) boyfriend Guero Davilas (Jon Ecker).
When Guero “died” though, Don Epifanio wanted to hunt down Teresa as she had a book containing incriminating evidence against him.
During the first season, Teresa was protected by Don Epifanio’s wife Camila Vargas (Veronica Falcon) in Dallas.
However, as Teresa started to make her own connections in the drug trade, she drifted away from Camila and their own rivalry began.
Why did Teresa kill Don Epifanio?
In season two episode 13, La Última Hora Mata, Guero secretly killed the pilot who was flying a aircraft with Camila,
Epifanio, Isabela Vargas (Idalia Valles) and James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) inside.
Guero flew the aeroplane to an undisclosed location so they can have a meeting with Teresa.
Isabela and James stayed on board while the others exit to meet her and Pote Galvez (Hemky Madera).
Teresa’s main purpose at this point wasn’t to hurt anyone but to make a deal.
Teresa was keen to negotiate but Camila accused her of having nothing which wasn’t true as she had El Santo (Steven Bauer) on her side, which meant she has the best cocaine in the market.
Epifanio, much to Teresa’s surprise, then spoke up saying it didn’t matter as they were now out of the business.
Teresa then said if they were really out then she wanted to take over Dallas but unfortunately, Camila said the territory was hers, despite agreeing with Epifanio to leave the drug trade behind.

So in a bid to try and back up his wife, Epifanio grabbed his gun and tried to kill Teresa but she shot first and ended up wounding him.
He said the only option now was to have Teresa killed but before he could draw his gun again, she shot the Governor and he landed on the track.
Shocked by what was happened, Isabela Vargas (Sandy Valles) got off the aeroplane and ran to her dad’s aid.
Sadly though, it was too late as Epifanio was dead, leaving Isabela and Camila heartbroken.
Pote Galvez (Hemky Madera) then said they needed to kill Camila as well but Teresa refused to as she wouldn’t want Isabela to see her mother die too.
Teresa killed Epifanio in self-defense as she didn’t want to hurt anyone.
She simply wanted the money Camila owed her to pay El Santo.
So Teresa and Pote took the ransom money and left before anymore damage was done.
Isabela and Camila were left to grieve over Epifanio’s body.
Queen of the South is available to watch on Netflix.
