RUSSELL Tovey has admitted that gritty new crime drama The Sister left him feeling "anxious, panicked and fearful" at home.
The spooky ITV series, which is due to start later this month, definitely got the actor, 38, out of his comfort zone as he admitted it was one of the most challenging roles he's ever had to portray.
Russell, who has starred in the likes of Years and Years, Gavin and Stacey, and Him & Her, has taken on the role of Nathan as his new on screen alter-ego.
During a recent press Q&A, the star admitted that it was difficult considering he's never really had to take work home in the past.
But he's grateful for the challenge as it has allowed him to "create something that people haven't seen [him] do" before.
He went on to add: "The thing about this role is you exist in this contained tension, where you – everything you’re saying is not what’s being said, and there is anxiety and absolute fear and panic.
"And I really wanted to serve Nathan, I wanted to create something that people haven’t seen me do that was really small, and minimal.”
Russell found it hard to detach himself from the his character because he really wanted to give it his all, and at times he found it draining.
He explained: "Nathan’s trying to just disappear, he wants to be invisible, so it’s about suppressing everything, but living in that energy for this time was a lot.
"And I definitely took it home with me, but I felt like you had to commit to this role, I had to do that to access this character, so I had to put myself in that position so when I finished this, I was absolutely exhausted and I was just like, wow, but that to serve Neil [Cross]’s writing with the dialogue to play this character.
"You have to put yourself emotionally and invest in these situations.”
The four-part series, which is written by Luthor writer Neil Cross and is inspired by the novel Burial, follows the story of Nathan's coverup from a bad crime he committed years ago.
He is surprised by an unwelcome face from his past one rainy evening telling him that the body they buried in the woods is on the brink of being dug up.
Nathan has never been able to forget the night of when they killed a young woman after attending a party together.
A new teaser clip of the show shows Russell's alter-ego on the edge of a breakdown as he tries to cover up the murder.
Nathan's blast from the past, Bob, told Nathan: "We've got to move her".
Nathan – who appears to now be married to the dead girl's sister – disagrees and said: "All we have to do is leave her be and leave her where she is."
He didn't seem phased by the fact that the police were sniffing around the area they buried her in and added: "Even if they did find her, and it's a big if, it's been so long, it's been years."
But Bob doesn't have the same look on their murder and told him: "She's haunting me Nathan. I woke up two days ago and she was standing there at the foot of my bed, her mouth was moving."
After hearing enough from Bob, Nathan tells him to sort it out, but his blast from the past pleads for his help as he can't sort it alone.
The Sister begins on October 26 on ITV and airs across four consecutive nights.
