This week, auctioneer Charles Hanson joined Steph McGovern and Denise Van Outen on the sofa of Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch. Charles is better known for his expertise on Bargain Hunt, Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip. The TV personality disclosed what unusual royal donations had sold for hundreds at auction claiming: “It’s not all about the jewellery or Faberge, darling”. Steph McGovern was left gobsmacked after the auctioneer revealed to the show’s live audience the price sold for a piece of toast once given to Prince Charles.

Speaking on the show, the Flog It! star went through some of the odder royal items he’s seen go under the hammer.

He said: “A piece of toast I once sold. It made £540.”

Host Steph, bewildered at the price, asked: “A piece of toast?!”

The expert replied: “It was obviously Prince Charles’ wedding day breakfast.”

The auctioneer went into more detail about what the Prince of Wales had eaten on the side of the £540 slice of bread sold at auction.

He said: “He had boiled eggs on toast. He left one piece of toast.

“The maid picked it up, came to me about seven years ago and I sold it,” continued the auctioneer.

Although the price was a staggering amount, Steph wanted to know what proof the auctioneer had to prove its authenticity.

The former BBC Breakfast star asked Charles: “How did you know it was his piece of toast?.”

“It was quite dry, so I knew it was old,” Charles responded.

“The house where we picked the toast up from, there was a real provenance to it so we were happy with it,” he continued.

Fascinated by the value, host Steph said: “Oh wow. So that one got 540 quid… for that bit of toast?”

She quickly followed up with: “That is mega.”

The auctioneer went on to discuss how much a pair of Queen Victoria’s knickers sold for which were even more expensive than Prince Charles’ leftover breakfast.

Charles added: “It’s not all about the jewellery of Faberge, darling, or expensive things. It can be objects really close to history.”

A photo of the royal “bloomers” was shown but both Steph and her guest couldn’t help but notice a giant hole at the front of the garment.

Denise Van Outen chuckled and said: “They are not my knickers, that’s for sure.”

“They made £5,000,” the auctioneer revealed.

Unlike the previous item, the knickers had more of an attachment to the late Queen, as Charles pointed out: ”What’s amazing is they’ve got a laundry number, a wash number, they were worn in rotation and Queen Victoria gave a lot away obviously to all those waiting in line.”

Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays from 12.30pm on Channel 4.
