The Last Kingdom season five is on the way for Netflix and viewers are keen for Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon) to return and claim back his homeland. The historical drama, which is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, was renewed for a fifth season in July 2020. Fans are keen to know whether season five will be the last and Express.co.uk has investigated.

Will season 5 of The Last Kingdom be the final season?
The Last Kingdom made its debut on BBC Two in 2015 and it moved over to Netflix for the third season.
The Anglo-Saxon series has continued to gain a huge following and fans are keen to see what is in store for Uhtred.
The series is based on the events and characters within The Saxon Stories, and each season covers two books.
Season five will be based on Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer – the ninth and 10th books.
There is no official release date for season five yet, but fans are keen to find out more about the show’s future.
Season five is unlikely to be the final season, as there are still three books left to cover.
War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings and War Lord are all yet to be explored, so it is hoped Netflix will renew the series.
There may only be one season left, with all three books covered in a sixth and final season.
This may come as bittersweet news to fans, who were hoping for another two seasons at least.
Still, Netflix is yet to officially confirm when the series will come to an end for certain.
Fans have taken to Reddit to discuss their thoughts, with one saying: “I think two or three seasons max. I do not think season five will be the last.”
Another said: “There will be six or seven in total. A season is worth two of the books and there’s 13 books so that’s my educated guess, but who knows what Netflix will do.” [Sic]
However, there are a few viewers who believe the upcoming season will be the last, with one saying: “Realistically season five will be the last one.”
War Lord, Cornwell’s final book, was released in October 2020 and Uhtred plays a crucial role in achieving King Alfred’s (David Dawson) dream.
In the final book, Aethelstan (Caspar Griffiths) breaks his oath to Uhtred by invading Northumbria.

He later forms a plan to take over Uhtred’s homeland of Bebbanburg in a tragic twist of events.
Fans had hoped to see Uhtred attempt to claim back Bebbanburg again in the upcoming season.
Hopefully, this important storyline will continue into a sixth season, but nothing is set in stone.
There is still a lot of the story left to tell, with newcomer Eadith (Stefanie Martini) being introduced in season four.
In the books she becomes Uhtred’s next love interest, so fans will be keen to see if the series stays true to the novels.
The upcoming season is also likely to focus heavily on Finan’s (Mark Rowley) background and his family.
He was forced out of Ireland after betraying his brother, and it is believed he will return to settle the score.
Fans had hoped to see Eadith and Finan get together following their connection in season four.
The new season will also continue to see Uhtred train young Aethelstan as the next king of Wessex.
The Last Kingdom is streaming on Netflix now.
