Matthew McConaughey had received copious award nominations for his acting throughout his career – but never an Oscar nomination.

That changed when he starred in Dallas Buyers Club – the film that earned McConaughey his first ever Academy Award.

The 2013 American biographical drama film documents the life of AIDS patient Ron Woodroof, who smuggles unapproved pharmaceutical drugs into Texas for his treatment

McConaughey lost a staggering 50 lbs. for the role.

In The Washington Post's review of the movie, the paper remarked: "McConaughey delivers the performance of his career, characterized not just by an astonishing physical transformation but by a wellspring of deep compassion and fearlessness."

McConaughey won the Oscar for his role in the movie, alongside his co-star Jared Leto, who won the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor.

McConaughey's Oscar acceptance speech is often looked upon as exemplary.

He said: "Every day, every week, every month and every year of my life, my hero's always 10 years away. I'm never gonna be my hero.

"I'm not gonna attain that. I know I'm not, and that's just fine with me because that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing."

McConaughey ended the speech with his catchphrase from his first major movie – Dazed and Confused.

He continued: "To that I say, 'Alright, alright, alright.' To that I say 'just keep living.' Thank you."

What other awards has he won?

Not only did Buyers Club win McConaughey an Oscar, but he also won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, as well as an AACTA International Award.

McConaughey's role in American anthology crime drama series True Detective was also critically acclaimed, and in 2015 he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries.

For the same role, he was also nominated for two Primetime Emmys.

McConaughey also won a Saturn award for Best Actor in the 2011 Gothic black comedy crime movie Killer Joe.

The actor was also nominated for a Saturn award for his subsequent roles in Gold (2016) and Interstellar (2014).
