Jamie Dutton uncovered some devastating truths about his history in the latest season of Yellowstone. Before the ground-breaking modern Western returns to Paramount and Peacock, Jamie star Wes Bentley has provided some key insight into his character’s last moments in season three.

Nobody’s journey in the third season of Yellowstone was quite so emotionally taxing as that of Jamie Dutton (played by Wes Bentley).

After learning the truth behind his birth, Jamie finally confronted his real father, Garret Randall (Will Patton), and learned some uncomfortable truths about his family history.

Now he feels even more distant from his adoptive father, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), Jamie could ironically be the safest member of the Dutton clan following the shocking events of this year’s finale.

In the climactic final moments, both John and his children Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) were targeted by unknown attackers, leaving their fates unclear.

Meanwhile, Jamie had just made a stunning power play by finally allowing the sale of Yellowstone Ranch, the largest contiguous ranch in the States.

Although the attorney needed permission from a father figure to sell John Dutton’s property, he took Garret’s message to fight for himself to heart and outmanoeuvred Beth in the tension-filled scene.

Even without the violent conclusion of the final episode of season three, Jamie’s decision would have ended Yellowstone’s latest instalment on an uncertain note.

With both the family and the ranch more vulnerable than ever, Jamie has opened up a world of possibilities for the upcoming fourth season.

During a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Jamie star Wes Bentley revealed his meeting with investors to sell the ranch was one of his best moments on the show so far.

He explained: “It’s interesting to watch him let them try to play off their power moves. Then Jamie drops the hammer and takes his power at the right moment.”

Bentley then added the sequence was “one of my favourite shooting the whole series.”

Known for appearing in American Beauty and The Hunger Games, Yellowstone is arguably the actor’s meatiest role to date, culminating in his compelling performance in the season finale.

Prior to this moment, Jamie has usually been on the fringe when it comes to major decisions about the Duttons’ vast stretch of land.

Frequently butting heads with the ranch’s banker and his own sister, Beth, this is one of the first times Jamie has managed to exert his power of attorney over the cut-throat Dutton family.

Season three added more fuel to the fire by revealing Jamie and Beth’s hatred for each other stemmed from Jamie’s decision to sterilise his sister when she became pregnant as a teenager.

Now the family feuds have started to boil to the surface and the rest of his family could be in critical condition following the attacks, Jamie is poised to exert the full extent of his power in season four.

Some fans have already started eying Jamie as a potential suspect behind the coordinated attacks on the Dutton family in the finale.

Thankfully, the series has managed to escape any extensive coronavirus delays, and is back in production in Montana.

As the ranch prepares to expose their rivals and settle the score in season four, Jamie could become the Duttons’ fiercest competitor going ahead.

Yellowstone returns with season 4 in 2021 on Paramount and Peacock.
