ALBANY — A 57-year-old top aide to upstate Democratic Rep. Anthony Brindisi was arrested Friday after paying $200 to have sex with a 17-year-old prostitute.
John Stemen, a caseworker in Brindisi’s Utica office, admitted to meeting the woman online and paying $200 for a “sexual date,” according to the New York State Police.
He has been charged with patronizing a prostitute in the third degree, which is a class A misdemeanor and is set to appear in Utica City Court on May 20.
“As soon as we were made aware of the charges, John Stemen was immediately terminated from his position,” Brindisi’s office said in a statement.
Stemen served as Director of Community Relations to the freshman Congressman since 2011, when he was in the state Assembly.
Before that, Stemen worked for Brindisi’s predecessor RoAnn Destitio for nearly 15 years. He also had a career in broadcast news.
Brindisi ousted former Republican Rep. and Trump ally Claudia Tenney in a bitter election, following the counting of nearly 6,000 absentee ballots.
During the campaign, Tenney warned staffers about Brindisi’s “criminal” and “thuggish” tendencies, highlighting the congressman’s family criminal history.
Tenney did not concede the race until nearly a month after the election.
Stemen did not a return a message for comment.
