AOC bemoans difficulty of being ‘taken seriously’ in makeup routine video

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has done a step-by-step tutorial of her makeup routine for Vogue — while lamenting it’s “so hard” to be treated seriously on Capitol Hill.

The freshman congresswoman from The Bronx videotaped herself applying foundation, curling her lashes, talking about the benefits of adding glitter to eye shadow and revealing what shade of lipstick she uses.

“I used to think that I would be taken less seriously, and as the youngest woman in Congress and as a woman of color, it’s so hard to be taken seriously,” the 30-year-old Democratic socialist told Vogue magazine in the video clip, just before showing her gold glittery eyeshadow palette.

“It’s like any workplace, where sometimes it feels like you just have to jump up and down for someone to listen. It’s just really difficult because some people are just born in bodies that are naturally taken more seriously.’’

AOC — who continued to roil the Democratic establishment last week with a speech backing onetime presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders at the party’s convention — said she was doing the video because she finds empowerment in her makeup bag.

“The reason why I think it’s so important to share these things is that, first of all, femininity has power, and in politics, there is so much criticism and nitpicking about how women and femme people present ourselves,” the congresswoman said.

“Just being a woman is quite politicized here in Washington.

“There’s this really false idea that if you care about makeup or if your interests are in beauty and fashion, that that’s somehow frivolous,’’ she said.

“But I actually think these are some of the most substantive decisions that we make — and we make them every morning.

“If I’m going to spend an hour in the morning doing my glam, it’s not going to be because I’m afraid of what some Republican photo is going to look like,’’ Ocasio-Cortez added.

“It’s because I feel like it.’’

For the record, here’s some of what AOC relies on:

Face: Nars lightweight tinted moisturizer, Estee Lauder’s Double Wear finish, Fenty Beauty’s Contour Stick, color corrector, concealer, vitamin C serum and a “generous” amount of sunscreen. She said she will often use a moisturizing mask while on the train back and forth to DC.

Eyebrows: Pencil. “I’m very lucky because brows are in,” AOC said. “My family has brows. Many people in my family are born with one brow, and we have to turn it into two brows.’’

Eyes: Glittery eyeshadow, crayon liner, mascara.

Lips: Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso. “One of the things that I had realized is that when you’re always running around, sometimes the best way to really look put together is a bold lip,” AOC said. “I will wear a red lip when I want confidence.

“If I had to give one piece of advice,’’ the lawmaker added, “it is that the key to beauty is the inside job — the key to beauty is feeling beautiful, and no amount of money or makeup can really compensate for loving yourself.’’
