A former army cadet instructor who raped a woman while she was ‘blind drunk’ has been jailed for seven years.

Robert Wilkinson, 22, of The Wills Building, Newcastle, left his victim feeling ‘worthless, useless, dirty and guilty’, a court heard.

Prosecutor Anne Richardson said Wilkinson boasted about the attack and sent ‘unsavoury’ messages to a friend.

Wilkinson denied rape and sexual assault and was tried by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court, who found him guilty.

Judge Penny Moreland jailed Wilkinson for seven years and said he must register as a sex offender for life.

The judge said the victim had been sick and was described as ‘blind drunk’

Judge Moreland told Wilkinson: ‘That is the state of the girl you sexually assaulted and raped.

‘She was particularly vulnerable

‘You left her after you committed those offences and you boasted of what you had done to her in texts to your friend on the way home.’

Judge Moreland said Wilkinson had denied the offences and claimed the victim consented to what happened but added that ‘the jury were sure that was not true’.

Annelise Haugstad, defending, said Wilkinson has no previous convictions and is of ‘positive good character’.
