Former NATO head says US is in ‘dangerous’ position with Iran

A former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO said the US is in a “dangerous” position in its standoff with Iran but believes ultimately the Islamic Republic will not go to war.

“We’re in a kind of dangerous place right now, because of escalation on both sides. It starts with Iran, of course,” James Stavridis told John Catsimatidis on his AM 970 radio show in an interview that aired Sunday, acknowledging Iran’s “bad behavior throughout the region.”

“Their escalation has now been matched by the United States,” Stavridis said. “Let’s be hopeful that the Iranians will see this show of force, the way [Trump] intends it, and will back down.”

In the end, Stavridis said Iran “cannot afford to go to war with us.”

Tensions have been heightened between Washington and Tehran after reports said Iran was planning attacks on American troops and ships in the region.

Earlier this month, the White House sent warships and bombers into the Persian Gulf to counter any threats from Iran and evacuated non-emergency personnel from Iraq.
